All about the detail design

During this phase of the design cycle, the design is developed in detail for each aspect of the product. The results of the detailed design are recorded for each discipline.

In this blog, we explain more about the concept of detail design from the design cycle.

Software detail design

We record the definition of the software in the Software Detailed Design (SDD) document. Based on what is defined in the architecture, in this phase we describe what the setup of the code is. We describe the design using a number of points.

  • functional blocks;
  • interfaces between blocks;
  • states of the software.

Without knowledge of code, the reader should be given the ability to form a picture of what the operation of the software will be. This gives the reader the ability to judge whether design requirements have been interpreted correctly.

Following an approved SDD, code development can begin.

Hardware detail design

This phase produces a Hardware Detailed Design document (HDD) that captures the design considerations. In performing the detailed hardware design, the required components are selected for all functions. The electronic circuits are designed.

Topics include:

  • simulations of partial circuits to assess performance in advance;
  • energy budget, power supply sequencing;
  • thermal aspects, dissipation, heat management, possibly the required cooling;
  • signal integrity;
  • EMC filtering and protection against ESD, EFT, surges;
  • an initial PCB layout, the stackup of the PCB, controlled impedances.

Interface detail design

Interfaces exist within a product in several areas. The Interface Detailed Design (IDD) document describes how the interface works but also how the interface can be used.

Housing design

Proper enclosure of the product is necessary to protect the electronics from outside influences. This is because different environmental factors can cause a lot of damage. For this reason, a suitable housing and its design are always considered.

The various options being considered include:

  • Full custom design (in collaboration with a partner or the client);
  • selection of a purchase part;
  • poured into synthetic resin (in collaboration with a partner).

 There are a number of considerations when choosing an enclosure. Some of the requirements include:

  • Image / Appearance;
  • Cost/Production numbers;
  • IPxx rating;
  • Robustness/impact resistance;
  • Flammability rating (UL / Glow wire);
  • Controls.

Confed plays primarily an advisory role in housing design. The actual design is carried out by external design partners.
